HARLEM, NY — Permits were filed with the city on Tuesday to construct a new nine-story apartment building in Central Harlem that appears likely to contain supportive housing.

The site — 49 West 128th St., between Malcolm X Boulevard and Fifth Avenue — is currently home to Bishop House, a residence for people with functional and behavioral disabilities, according to a state website.

The new building would rise 95 feet high and contain 91 units. Of the building's 60,278 square feet, the majority would be reserved for community space, while the apartments would take up 12,000 square feet, permits show.

The site's listed owner is Taso Vassiliou, senior vice president of real property at The Bridge, a supportive housing organization based nearby in Harlem. Weston House, which manages the current Bishop House facility, became affiliated with The Bridge in 2016.

The permits did not specify whether the new building would contain supportive housing. No permits have yet been filed to demolish the existing three-story building, and the construction permits gave no indication of when work would begin.
