Smell Gas In Harlem This Morning? Here's Why

A few Harlem blocks may be filled with a natural gas smell this week as crews work on a pipeline near Riverside Drive, the city said.

HARLEM, NY — If the air in West Harlem reeks of gas this morning, don't fear: there's a reason why, according to the city.

Planned natural gas work by the Williams Companies will create a natural gas odor along 12th Avenue between West 132nd and 134th streets on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, the city said in an alert on Tuesday.

The smell will be present between around 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday, and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, the city said. In the event of a gas emergency, residents should call 911.

Those West Harlem blocks, running under the Riverside Drive viaduct, are commonly filled with a different, more pleasant aroma: the smell of barbecue wafting over from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que on West 125th Street.
