These Harlem Venues, Museums Got $6M In 'Save Our Stages' Grants
More than two dozen Harlem organizations got "Shuttered Venue" grants from the federal stimulus, but others may still be waiting.

HARLEM, NY — The Apollo, Dance Theatre of Harlem and more than two dozen other Harlem organizations have gotten emergency relief grants from the federal government, according to a recent update — though other venues may still be waiting.
About $5.7 million have gone to Harlem establishments as part of the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant — a component of last December's stimulus package also known as Save Our Stages.
Though the $16 billion program has been a lifeline to many venues that lost out on months of revenue during the pandemic, it was also plagued by an initially slow rollout. As of Monday, just $7.6 billion had been distributed, leaving lots of money left to be claimed, according to a report by the Small Business Administration.

In Harlem, no institutions received the maximum $10 million grant. The biggest winner, at $1.3 million, was the Apollo Theater Foundation, followed by the Dance Theatre of Harlem at $1.2 million.
Most neighborhood recipients were smaller organizations, like The Movement Theatre Company on West 127th Street, which got $95,000, or the Room 623 speakeasy on West 119th Street.

But some prominent names are absent from the list. The Studio Museum in Harlem has not received any funding; nor has El Museo del Barrio on Fifth Avenue.
Neither museum immediately responded to questions about whether they had applied for grants.
