Purchase College Named A 2017 'Best College Value'

Admission rate, percentage of students who return for sophomore year, among others, are factors taken into consideration.

From Purchase College: Purchase College, State University of New York (SUNY), is listed as a 2017 Best College Value by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. Introduced in 1998, the rankings highlight public schools, private universities, and private liberal arts colleges that combine outstanding academics with affordable cost. Purchase College is listed in the top 100 best values among public colleges.

Thomas J. Schwarz, president of Purchase College, said, “We remain dedicated to providing the highest quality education in the liberal arts, sciences, and performing and visual arts. We are proud to provide an affordable and accessible experience, while nurturing the creative process and open-minded engagement that are the hallmarks of a Purchase education.”

Kiplinger assesses value by measurable standards of academic quality and affordability. Quality measures include admission rate, percentage of students who return for sophomore year, student-faculty ratio, and four-year graduation rate. Cost criteria include sticker price, financial aid, and average debt at graduation. Many schools have appeared on the list multiple years in a row, including Purchase College, which is a testament to the consistent value it provides.

“There’s no way around it: College is expensive, and it’s going to stay that way for a long time. So, with our rankings—which weigh affordability alongside academic quality—our goal is to help students and their parents understand what’s really worth the price,” said Janet Bodnar, Editor of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine. “While some may have ranked higher than others, all 300 schools on the list are of extraordinary value, being chosen out of a universe of 1,200.”

The complete rankings are now available online at kiplinger.com/links/colleges and will appear in print in the February 2017 issue ofKiplinger’s Personal Finance.
