Hauppauge Fire Department Ex-Chief Stephen A. Feron, 'World-Class Guy,' Dies At 49

Feron died during a training exercise. "Socially, he was just a world-class guy ... He was our morale officer," Chief Kenneth Furuno​ said.

HAUPPAUGE, NY — Stephen A. Feron, an ex-chief with the Hauppauge Fire Department, died on Saturday during a training exercise with the Suffolk County Urban Search and Rescue Team, the fire department announced. Feron was a member of the department's truck company.

Feron was a second-generation chief of department in Hauppauge serving from 2018 until 2019. His father, Stephen B. Feron, served as Chief of Department from 1985 through 1988. The department did not release Feron's cause of death.

Chief Kenneth Furuno pointed out the significance of Feron's status of being an ex-chief, noting he led the fire department for a couple of years.

"Socially, [Feron] was just a world-class guy," Furuno told Patch. "He was a very outgoing, very personal, caring man. He was a good role model. He definitely was able to connect with our younger members, to mentor them, and made everybody feel welcome. He was our morale officer, if you will."

Feron is survived by his wife, Kelly, son, Stephen, and daughter, Ana.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the Feron and Fallona families," the Hauppauge Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

The department thanked the Central Islip Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance Corps. for transporting Feron to the Medical Examiners Office as part of the dignified transfer.

"We would like to thank all of our neighboring fire departments for their show of respect this afternoon during the transfer to the Medical Examiner," the department wrote.

Feron's wake is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Moloney Funeral Home, at 840 Wheeler Road, Hauppauge, according to the Hauppauge Fire Department.

His firematic service is slated for 8 p.m. Friday.

Feron's funeral mass is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More Church, at 115 Kings Highway, Hauppauge.
