Man, 20, Nabbed For Part In Illegal Speed Contest In Centereach Last Month: Police

A probe was launched after officers saw a 2019 Dodge Challenger with its tires spinning in the parking lot, police say.

CENTEREACH, NY — A Rocky Point man has been charged in connection with taking part in an illegal speed contest in Centereach last month, Suffolk police said.

Members of Suffolk's Police Street Takeover Task Force saw a 2019 Dodge Challenger being driven recklessly just off Middle Country Road in the parking lot of a shopping center with an urgent care, ambulatory surgery facility, bank, and discount store, on the evening of Nov. 29, according to police.

The vehicle was seen with its tires spinning in a way that created friction and smoke before being driven away from the scene, police said.

Investigative Unit officers from the 6th Precinct in Selden arrested a 20-year-old man on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful speed contest, according to police.

His vehicle was seized as part of the investigation, and he was released on a Field Appearance Ticket returnable to First District Court in Central Islip on a later date.

It is not clear if he has legal representation.
