Brooklyn Bridge Park Thief Steals Ball Player's Phone, Uploads Selfie to the Cloud: NYPD

It's 2016, and we've still apparently got thieves who don't know how the cloud works.

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY — Another day, another (alleged) New York City cellphone thief so eager to get his selfie on he (allegedly) forgot to disconnect his stolen device from the cloud.

According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the latest derp-y perp to fall victim to modern cloud-storage technology found his victim in a 21-year-old soccer player who tossed his bag on the ground before a game at the Pier 5 ball field in Brooklyn Bridge Park (also not the smoothest move) on Friday, Sept. 23, around 6:40 p.m.

Upon returning to the spot where he left his bag, the 21-year-old couldn't find it anywhere, police said.

The bag contained his Sony Experia cellphone, a Chase credit card and "other personal items," according to the NYPD.

Now, this soccer player's story would likely have ended here — if not for a selfie taken by the person now in possession of the phone, "captured via [the] victim's storage subscription service" (aka, the cloud), according to police.

So either the guy in the photo above is the guy who stole a Sony Experia at Brooklyn Bridge Park a few Fridays ago, or he's the guy who bought or was gifted the loot.

Either way, if you recognize him, NYPD detectives (and a 21-year-old soccer player somewhere) are hoping you'll reach out to police at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or 1-888-57-PISTA (74782) for Spanish.

Tips can also be submitted online or by texting 274637 (CRIMES), then entering TIP577. All tips are "strictly confidential," according to the NYPD.
