Fire Knocks Out 4 And 5 Trains Between Manhattan and Brooklyn

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY — A fire on the third rail near the Borough Hall station knocked out 4 and 5 train service between Manhattan and Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The FDNY responded to the fire at about 12:55 p.m. and it took nearly 60 firefighters until 1:56 p.m. to get it under control, a spokeswoman for the agency said. No injuries were reported in the blaze.

The blaze knocked out power to the 4 and 5 trains and caused the MTA to suspend service on those lines between the Atlantic Avenue-Barclay Center and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall stations, a spokesman for the MTA said.

Some 5 trains were running along the 2 line between the Nevins Street and 149th Street-Grand Concourse stations in both directions and some Brooklyn-bound trains were ending service at Grand Central, the agency said.

The spokesman expected it to take a while for workers to get the power back and service to return to normal.
