Gang Member Sentenced To 15 Years For Shooting Man At Applebee's

Tyshawn Simon-Roberson was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for the 2015 shooting that left one injured and led to the death of a teen.

BROOKLYN, NY — A gang member will spend 15 years behind bars for a shooting that sparked a fight and led to the death of a 16-year-old outside a Downtown Brooklyn Applebee's, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced.

Tyshawn Simon-Roberson, 18, of Downtown Brooklyn, was sentenced Tuesday for his manslaughter conviction after he shot an 18-year-old man in the leg twice during a gang dispute outside the 395 Flatbush Ave. Extension eatery in 2015, prosecutors said.

The shooting sparked a chase between the groups when Simon-Roberson's fellow gang member Malik Peters fatally shot Armani Hankins, 16.

"This defendant opened fire in a bustling neighborhood, not far from a hospital and a college campus, wounding a young man," Gonzalez said in a statement. "With today's sentence, he has been held responsible for his brazen and lawless actions."

On Oct. 16, 2015, the Fort Greene-based gang "900" — which Simon-Roberson and Peters were members of — met up with East New York's "4 to 5" gang in front of the Applebee's at about 6 p.m., prosecutors said.

The dispute turned violent when Simon-Roberson took out a gun and shot a rival gang member twice in the leg, authorities said. The "4 to 5" crew chased after "900" members when Peters, 19, shot Hankins in the head, police said.

Hankins was taken to Brooklyn Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Simon-Roberson and Peters, of Fort Greene, were convicted of manslaughter, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon last month, prosecutors said.

Peters faces up to 55 years in prison for the shooting and is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 27, Gonzalez said.
