See the latest stormy forecast.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A 'bomb cyclone' is headed for Long Island, first bringing drenching rains and then powerful winds to the area.

Rain will move in early Saturday and pick up in intensity around sunrise, the National Weather Service says.

As the storm strengthens, it will likely undergo a period of rapid intensification known as bombogenesis, which is when the central pressure of a storm drops by 0.71 of an inch of mercury (24 millibars) or more over a 24-hour period to become what is known as a bomb cyclone, AccuWeather.com says.

About an inch of rain is expected, most it from around 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Temperatures in the 40s will keep away any snow.

The rain should end by the evening, but that's when the winds will really pick up.
