HICKSVILLE, NY — Hicksville art student Lily Wagner was recently named a Congressional Arts winner and received first-place recognition in the nationwide competition organized through the Congressional Institute. Additionally, Hicksville students Elizabeth Benitez, Amber Corbett and Linda Chen each submitted pieces in this year’s Artistic Discovery competition.

Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated in the visual art competition through the Congressional Institute. Open only to high school students, the goal is to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district.

Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel, which connects the U.S. Capitol to the Cannon House Office Building.
