HUNTINGTON, NY — Charlie, Ciara, Cleopatra, Celine and Charlotte are the Huntington Pets of the Week. The five kittens are between 5 and 6 months old.

"Sometimes you never know where you are needed to help kittens/cats in distress," said Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter.

The "C" kittens are not from Long Island — a good Samaritan rescued them near Lake George.

They were posted on Facebook as "kittens for free," which Larkin said is "always a red flag for a rescuer."

The good Samaritan saw the post and set out to help. She only found out where they were located after she committed to helping. She and her family set out for Lake George in November to go get them, according to Larkin.

"She thought she could take care of them but unfortunately she did not realize how sick they were, although she tried her best to help," Larkin said.

All of the kittens had upper respiratory infections, mites and ear infections, and they were infested with fleas and worms, were dehydrated and extremely lethargic, Larkin said.

"After struggling for a short time of trying to nurse them back to health, she reached out to us to help," Larkin said. "...Of course we said yes."

The good Samaritan had actually recently adopted three kittens from Grateful Paw last year, Larkin said.

Charlie, Ciara, Cleopatra, Celine and Charlotte arrived on the shelter's doorstep at the beginning of December. They were taken to the rescue's in- house veterinarian hospital so they could get the proper care they needed to treat all of their ailments, Larkin said.

"Thankfully they were so happy to be held and loved, and they gave no problems during this time and now they are ready to join the rest of the crew at the shelter," Larkin said.

Charlie is all grey and very sleek looking, according to Larkin. He loves his sisters and is always trying to engage them in the toy activities. He loves people and will be the first one to greet someone when they enter a room.

Cleopatra and Celine are very similar in looks and personality, Larkin noted. They are a mixture of grey and cream tabby and have huge expressive eyes. They enjoy playing with one another and perching on the condos to look out the window and survey "their kingdom."

Charlotte is the most vocal…always meowing about something, Larkin said. Her foster mom said she had a 'cattitude' issue.

"Not sure if she is yelling for food or attention!" Larkin said.

Charlotte also has the same coloring as Cleopatra, and Celine so they could actually be triplets, Larkin said.

"Thank goodness they all have a different color collar on so we can identify who is who," she said.

Ciara is the quiet one. Although her markings are very similar to those of her sisters, her coat has more grey than the others. She can get overwhelmed by all of the activity in the room, so people will sometimes find her off to the side, just observing.

"All of them have very good appetites and want to be loved," Larkin said. "They love brushing and lots of chin and head scratches, which will get their tiny motors running nonstop," she said. "Occasionally they all get the 'zoomies,' and they have a race around the room, running across the floor and leaping onto the condos. These activities will make you think they are trying out for the 'Kitty Olympics.' And when they are not doing normal kitten activity, they love to settle down next to you and watch TV, so you better have the birdie channel available!"

All five kittens have tested negative for FELV and FIV, "finally" tested negative for parasites, had their ears and hearts checked, received their vaccines and have been spayed or neutered.

"They have been through so much, so we are grateful they are finally in good health and should be
entering the shelter before the end of next week," Larkin said.

If you are interested in meeting any of the five kittens, you may call the shelter at 631-757-4517, email cats@laphuntington.org, visit the Facebook page or visit at the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter.

The rescue is at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

The shelter is also open from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday nights only for those who cannot make it during the daytime hours.

"These kittens are very bonded, not surprisingly, so we are encouraging potential adopters to take two together, unless your home already has another cat that needs company," Larkin said. "They all have such stamina and spirit and they would make a wonderful addition to a loving and active
family. We want 2025 to be the start of something wonderful for all of them!"
