Crime Nearby: Art Dealer Accused of Tax Fraud

An art dealer from Long Island was accused on May 21 of filing false tax returns and failing to disclose a foreign bank account to the IRS. 

Glafira Rosales of Sands Point failed to report the receipt of at least $12.5 million earned from the sale of works purported to be by celebrated abstract expressionist artists, according to prosecutors. Most of the income was received in a bank account in Spain that Rosales hid from and failed to disclose to the IRS.  

Rosales’s attorney, Steven R. Kartagener, said, “Glafira Rosales fully intends to defend herself against these charges and she is confident that when all the facts become known she will be vindicated,” according to a New York Times report.

On each of the three false tax return charges, she faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison, a maximum term of three years of supervised release, and a maximum fine of $100,000. On each of the five willful failure to file FBAR charges, she faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a maximum term of five years of supervised release, and a maximum fine of $250,000. 

Raymond Roth Pleads Not Guilty

Raymond Roth, the man accused of faking his death at Jones Beach last year,  pleaded not guilty on May 21 to attempted kidnapping charges.

Roth was remanded without bail following his arraignment in front of Judge Tammy Robbins in Nassau County Court, according to court papers.

It was not the first time Roth appeared in in court to enter a plea.  He agreed to a plea bargain March 21 that would allow him to serve 90 days in jail on charges that he faked his own death to collect insurance money in July.

But later that same day, police said he claimed he was a police officer while following a woman in Freeport.  

Suspect in Plainview Robbery Nabbed   

Three months after Nassau County Police collared two men in the act of burglarizing a Plainview home, they caught up with a third suspect. Roy Wilson, 19, of Baldwin, was arrested May 24 and charged with first-degree burglary in connection with a Feb. 11 incident on Felice Lane as well as multiple vehicle and traffic law violations. 

Long Beach Woman Charged with Intent to Deal Drugs

A woman in Long Beach was charged on May 23 with cocaine, marijuana and prescription drug possession with intent to deal the narcotics. 

According to Long Beach Police Department, detectives executed a search warrant for the Shore Road apartment of Susan Garcia, a self-employed dog walker and house cleaner, and recovered more than a half-ounce of cocaine, two scales and packaging materials commonly used for drug sales along with drug records at about 11:20 p.m. on May 23.    

Police also recovered more than eight ounces of marijuana packaged in a manner consistent with intent to sell, as well as an assortment of illegally controlled prescription pills. An amount of $20,484 in cash was seized for forfeiture. 

Garcia was arrested at the scene without incident and charged her with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance of a half ounce or more, and third-degree criminal possession of marijuana of more than eight ounces. 
  
Arraigned at Long Beach City Court on May 24 and released on $5,000 bond, Garcia is to appear in Nassau County Court on June 6.
