"National Youth Heart Screening Day serves as a vital call-to-action, raising awareness about the importance of early detection through heart screenings," the district stated.

More than 300 student-athletes gathered at Oldfield Middle School’s gymnasium to undergo comprehensive cardiac screening. Nurses assessed their blood pressure, height, weight, before performing EKGs and heart scans. Students then reviewed their results with an on-site doctor.

The results of five students required follow-up with a cardiologist, so their parents were immediately notified and they were given detailed instructions.

"With sudden cardiac emergencies becoming more common in young student-athletes, this event is a game-changer for our students and their families," said Rob Franco, director of physical education, health, and athletics for Harborfields Central School District. "Early detection can save lives, and we are thrilled that these incredible foundations wanted to partner with us to provide this critical screening opportunity to our community."

Before leaving, students also received hands-on CPR and the AED training. They are now equipped with lifesaving skills that can significantly improve survival rates in sudden cardiac emergencies.

"By participating in this event, Harborfields continues its commitment to student health and safety," the district stated.
