"Planning and Democracy" (from the Road to Serfdom) by Friedrich Hayek (1899-1992)
The Second World War was a crucible for the formulation of F. A. Hayek’s economic theories. According to the Austro-English Hayek, it was a mistake to view the central planning and coordination of the war effort as a validation of a socialistic system. Fascism and communism have more in common with each other than they do with the political economies of free market democracies, he argues. Hayek is considered an advocate of certain strands of modern libertarianism, and this selection comes from his best-known book, The Road to Serfdom. Registration required and open to all.
