HUNTINGTON, NY — S'Mores, an 8-month-old female tabby, is the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter's Huntington Pet of the Week.

She is another young kitten born into the scary, empty life of a colony cat, according to Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter.

"We have been receiving so many of these babies the past year and we are doing our best to give them a chance at a new life," Larkin said.

S'Mores arrived on the rescue's doorstep last week. She was part of a backyard colony, and the feeder realized she was friendly enough and had a good chance at becoming an "indoor" kitten, so she brought her in.

"You can tell right away that she was outside by her 'tipped ear,' and while some people looking
to adopt from a rescue or shelter have an issue with the ear tipping, it does not affect their
personality at all," Larkin said. "It is just a marking in case she was ever re-released into the colony, people know she has been spayed already."

Although S’Mores was brought inside after her spay surgery and she thought she had found her
forever home, that was not the case, Larkin said.

"The owner had a problem with her living arrangements and had to move and unfortunately waited until the last minute to let someone know that she could not take S’Mores with her..so we stepped in to help," Larkin said.

S’Mores is fully vetted, had all of her vaccines, tested negative for FELV and FIV, tested negative
for parasites, and is litter box trained and spayed. She has been placed in one of the rescue's free roaming rooms with other cats approximately the same age.

"She loves other cats and we believe she is good with dogs," Larkin said. "Young children (under 6 yrs old) seem to frighten her, probably because they can be loud and move very fast, so she would do better with someone older and more gentle."

S'Mores loves to greet everyone at the door as they walk past, according to Larkin.

"I am sure she is hoping they will come into the room to meet her," she said.

She also loves to play with the feather toys and the springs, which she tosses around the room. And if someone sits down, she will climb up next to them looking for love and head scratches.

"Tabby cats are unique creatures and incredibly affectionate and intelligent," Larkin said. "They love cuddles and a whole lot of attention. However, tabbies can get a little bit cranky if they don’t get their way; and since as a rule they are very bright, they usually end up getting what they want. We are waiting patiently to see S’Mores real personality, but since she is only here about a week,
we may have to wait a bit longer."

"Please give this girl her forever home right now," Larkin said. "We would like to see her get adopted before we are inundated with lots of kittens and she is passed over because she is too old. She would bring so much joy to your home with her loving personality and door greeting skills!"
