South Huntington Veteran Honored By Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly
Sergeant Charlie Armstrong coordinates the American Legion's Boys & Girls State Program, teaches flag etiquette to Scout troops, and more.

DEER PARK, NY — Sergeant Charlie Armstrong of South Huntington was named the 17th Legislative District's 2024 Veteran of the Year by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D —Deer Park), Donnelly's office announced.
Armstrong was recognized for his "exceptional service to our country and his ongoing dedication to the community," Donnelly's office stated.
Armstrong is an active member of the American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 and served as Sergeant at Arms for 15 years. He also coordinates the American Legion’s Boys & Girls State Program, teaches flag etiquette to Scout troops, and oversees the Flag Retirement Program, managing 11 drop boxes across the Town of Huntington to ensure respectful flag retirements.

Born in Philadelphia, Armstrong studied mechanical engineering at Penn State University before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1965. He trained as an aircraft mechanic at Sheppard Air Force Base, achieved the rank of sergeant, and served honorably from 1966 to 1971 at Dover Air Force Base, working on C119 and C141 aircraft.
After his military service, he built a distinguished career as a mechanical engineer and leader in the security industry, holding roles such as product manager at National Lock Hardware, vice president of sales at Southern Lock and Supply, and president of Arrow Lock Manufacturing, where he served until retiring in 2007.

Armstrong joined the American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 when he relocated to Long Island in 2000 and quickly became very active.
"Sergeant Charlie Armstrong has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to service, both in his time in the Air Force and through dedication to our community," Donnelly stated in a news release. "It is an honor to recognize him as Veteran of the Year and to celebrate the positive impact he has made on the lives of so many in the 17th Legislative District and all of Suffolk County."
Resolution No. 841-2024, established a recognition program in which each legislator selects a veteran residing in his or her legislative district to coincide with the national celebration of Veterans Day, further recognizes individuals for their courage, honor, patriotism and sacrifice.
Armstrong and the other recipients were recognized at the Nov. 26 general meeting in Hauppauge, where Donnelly presented him with a county proclamation.
