Southdown School Wins 'Matilda' Cast Show

Huntington school chosen for performance, chance to interact with Broadway actors.

Southdown School has won a performance by actors from the Broadway show "Matilda the Musical."

Cast members from the  show, which was nominated for 12 Tony awards, will perform June 18 at the school as part of an hour-long interactive cast performance.

The school won the performance in a contest sponsored by public radio station WSHU in Connecticut, part of the station's 13th annual “Music in Our Schools” outreach program.

More than 400 students will be able to see the performance, which will feature a question and answer session in which children ask questions about music and the performing arts. Students will get  chance to perform, singing a signature song as they learn some choreography.

The winning prize entry was submitted by music teacher John Murphy.

The play, based on the book by Roald Dahl, won seven 2012 Olivier Awards in Britain.

“The ‘Music in Our Schools’ program is an integral part of our mission to serve our community,” said WSHU General Manager George Lombardi.  “It also fits into our work to promote the importance of music, art, and culture.   We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring something really special to educators and children in our community.”

This year’s outreach program is sponsored by the Drama League of New York, Really Good Stuff, and IKEA New Haven.
