Street Lighting Improvements Coming to Depot Road

The work is to begin immediately and take approximately three-four weeks to complete, officials say.

Street-lighting improvements are coming to Depot Road, from 9th to 17th Street in Huntington Station, authorities said.

Each of the current 40-watt bulb fixtures on Depot Road will be replaced with 80-watt fixtures, according to Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. The work is to begin immediately and take approximately three-four weeks to complete.

News of the improvements coincide with the tragic death of Raymond Sipel, Jr., a 30-year-old active firefighter with the the Huntington Manor Fire Department. Sipel was crossing at the intersection of Depot Road and 20th Street, when he was struck by a taxi, police said.

The neighborhood has also been rocked by two violent crimes, including the deaths of Maggie Rosales in October and Daniel Carbajal in July.

As Suffolk County police have worked to reduce crime in the area, residents have asked government officials to enhance quality of life issues to help increase safety, including through improved street lighting.

Looking to boost safety, Berland had consulted earlier with members of the 2nd Precinct, and requested that the director of the Department of Transportation and Traffic Safety survey the street lights on Depot Road from 9th to 17th Street.

“Brighter bulbs are needed to deter crime and provide our residents with a safer environment,“ she said.

“The residents of Depot Road deserve to feel safe and I believe these measures will help,” she added.
