Water District Prepares New Well

New well replaces one sunk in 1953.

Work to replace a well dug in 1953 is moving along, Greenlawn Water District Superintendent Bob Santoriello said Thursday.

The old No. 3 well, at Stillwell Street and Park Avenue in Huntington, has been replaced, with workers digging down 650 feet with a 20-inch steel casing. Workers are putting up a small building on the site.

When the new well is functioning, it will pump about 1,380 gallons a minute, he said. The replaced well "served faithfully for many years but took it offline about 15 years ago," Santoriello said. "Then we decided we needed some more water."

He said he hopes the well work will be complete and ready for testing in October. Once the work passes inspection, the well will immediately start working.
