Long Island On Severe Thunderstorm Watch: National Weather Service

LONG ISLAND, NY — A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect on Long Island until 8 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

The possible showers and thunderstorms have the potential to produce scattered flash flooding and damaging winds.

Excessive rainfall is also expected on and Thursday, along with a heat advisory.

Temperatures will reach into the 90s on Thursday on Long Island, and may approach 100 on Friday, a hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service said.

The hot weather is due to a "Bermuda High" pressure system is moving in, according to the National Weather Service.

"Bermuda High Pressure will establish itself mid to late this week, setting up a significant warming trend," the NWS New York office tweeted.

On Tuesday night, showers and thunderstorms are likely before midnight with a 60 percent chance of precipitation. then a slight chance of showers between midnight and 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69.

Thursday: A slight chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. Breezy, with a south wind 13 to 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
