Islip Street To Be Renamed After Recently Fallen Firefighter
Jesse Gerhard, who died earlier this year from a Queens fire, will be honored on his 34th birthday.

ISLIP, NY — An Islip street is to be renamed in honor of a fallen Long Island firefighter, who died in the line of duty this year.
S. Bay Ave will officially be renamed in memory of FDNY member Jesse Gerhard, of Long Beach on Wednesday, which would have been his 34th birthday, a news release said.
Gerhard suffered a "medical episode" after battling a Queens fire in February.

He served seven years in the FDNY, and volunteered with the Islip Fire Department.
First responders and firefighters turned out in droves for Gerard's funeral services in Bay Shore, alongside New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Michael Ormiston, Gerhard's colleague in Ladder 134, said at the services that he "helped whoever he could, whenever he could," and made an everlasting impact on the firehouse."
He was the 1,156th member of the FDNY to die in the line of duty, officials said.
Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Town of Islip Town board members, Islip Fire Department officials, family and friends of Jesse Gerhard, local elected officials, and members of the FDNY are expected to attend the renaming ceremony.
