Organs Of Beloved Islip Fire Chief To Save 5 Lives: Nonprofit

The individuals were in need of a heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys.

ISLIP, NY — The organs of a beloved Islip fire chief and New York City Fire Department (FDNY) member, who was critically injured in a fire drill last week, are expected to save five people, LiveOnNY, organ donation organization announced on Tuesday.

William "Billy" Moon, 47, of Islip, was preparing for a drill inside his firehouse – Rescue Company 2– located at 1815 Sterling Place in Brooklyn, last week when he fell about 20 feet and suffered a serious head injury, officials said.

He was immediately treated for his injuries by his fellow Firefighters and was then rushed by FDNY EMS to Kings County Hospital in critical condition.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Friday that Moon was not expected to survive his injuries, and his family decided to donate his organs, as a final act of service.

LiveOnNY, a nonprofit organization committed to supporting organ and tissue donation in New York state, said in a statement that his organs will save the lives of five individuals, including three patients in New York who were in need of a heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys.

"Firefighter Moon was a hero in life and is now a hero in death who will live on through the gracious gifts of organ donation," said LiveOnNY. "LiveOnNY is humbled and honored to be the steward of these precious gifts. We extend our deepest condolences to the Moon family. Our thoughts and prayers remain with them during this difficult time.”

Moon is survived by his wife, Kristina, and their two children.

Visitation for Moon will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 28, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Chapey Funeral Home, located at 200 East Main St. in East Islip, FDNY said on social media.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, located at 9 N. Clinton Ave. in Bay Shore.
