Town Of Islip Holds Procession For Beloved Fire Chief

ISLIP, NY — A beloved Islip fire chief whose organs were donated after suffering a fatal injury was brought to his hometown on Wednesday.

Members of the FDNY and the Islip Fire Department, led a a procession for William "Billy" Moon, 47, of Islip, at 2 p.m.

The procession took place on Main Street and headed south on Islip Avenue, "to give him the Hero's welcome that he so deserves."

Members of the East Islip, Central Islip, Lakeland, Sayville, West Sayville, Bay Shore, Great River, fire departments, as well as Exchange Ambulance, lines the roadways to pay respects to the procession and flew flag arches.

On Dec. 12, Moon was preparing for a drill inside his firehouse – Rescue Company 2– located at 1815 Sterling Pl. in Brooklyn, last week when he fell about 20 feet and suffered a serious head injury, officials said.

He was immediately treated for his injuries by his fellow firefighters and was then rushed by FDNY EMS to Kings County Hospital in critical condition.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Friday that Moon was not expected to survive his injuries, and his family decided to donate his organs, as a final act of service.

"Billy Moon was the epitome of the word 'public servant,'" Supervisor Angie Carpenter said in a statement to Patch. "From his volunteerism as Chief of the Islip Fire Department in 2017, serving 21 years with the FDNY, to his volunteer work as a coach with the St. John of God Peewee Lightning Roller Hockey team, Billy Moon exemplified what it meant to serve his community. "

She went on to say that he was a devoted and loved father and cherished friend and colleague.

"Billy’s legacy will live on through his wife, two children, all those whose lives he touched, and through the 5 organ donor recipients whose lives he saved in death," she said. "He will be truly missed, and will continue to be an inspiration to us all.”

LiveOnNY, a nonprofit organization committed to supporting organ and tissue donation in New York state, said Moon's organs would save the lives of five people.

Moon is survived by his wife, Kristina, and their two children.

Visitation for Moon will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 28, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Chapey Funeral Home, located at 200 East Main St. in East Islip, FDNY said on social media.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, located at 9 N. Clinton Ave. in Bay Shore.
