NY Election Results: Ramos Beats Peralta In Senate Primary
Jessica Ramos, a former staffer for Mayor Bill de Blasio, ousted Jose Peralta, a former member of the Independent Democratic Conference.

JACKSON HEIGHTS, NY — Jessica Ramos defeated incumbent state Sen. Jose Peralta in Thursday’s Democratic primary for the 13th Senate District, scoring an upset victory.
Ramos had 56.4 percent of the vote to Peralta’s 43.4 percent with roughly 87 percent of precints reporting, according to the state Board of Elections. NY1 called the race for Ramos at about 10:10 p.m.
Ramos, a former staffer for Mayor Bill de Blasio, was among eight challengers to the former members of the Independent Democratic Conference, a now-disbanded group of breakaway Democrats who for years shared power with Senate Republicans.

Peralta, first elected to the Senate in 2010, had touted his roots in the district and experience as a lawmaker. But Ramos slammed the incumbent for blocking progressive policy priorities by giving the GOP a majority in Albany's upper chamber.
Ramos wasn't the only successful challenger to ex-IDC members. Robert Jackson defeated state Sen. Marisol Alcantara in Manhattan and Zellnor Myrie beat state Sen. Jesse Hamilton in Brooklyn.

Ramos will take on the district's Republican candidate in the Nov. 6 general election.
The anti-incumbent wave in state Senate races didn't move Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who easily defeated the actress and activist Cynthia Nixon in the gubernatorial primary.
Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul held a narrow lead over City Councilman Jumaane Williams in the lieutenant governor's race, while Public Advocate Letitia James led a four-candidate pack for attorney general.
