Ocasio-Cortez Office Stalled By Shutdown, NYC Landlord, Rep Says
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the federal shutdown and a Queens landlord are to blame for her not yet opening her local offices.

NEW YORK CITY -- Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose work in Washington has repeatedly made national headlines, has not yet opened up her local district offices and she says the federal shutdown and a New York City landlord are to blame.
“We can’t properly set up our district offices, we can’t get laptops delivered," the Bronx and Queens representative said on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" Monday night.
"We can’t start doing the work that we were elected here to do.”

After a New York Times report noted the shutdown had not prevented three other first-term New York Congress members from opening offices, Ocasio-Cortez clarified on Twitter that the new office had been stalled by a landlord who wanted to double her rent.
Office update/NYC Rent life: although we attempted to take over our predecessor’s lease, the landlord wanted to almost double rent (from ~$7.8k/mo to $15k/mo). That spike would have meant less caseworkers for our community. Instead, we’re making a new space w/ a family business! pic.twitter.com/PrM8E1v8wh

The congresswoman has leased another location along 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights and some staff members are working out State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi's Bronx office, the New York Times reported.

Until Ocasio-Cortez's two 14th District offices in The Bronx and Queens are completed, constituents' requests will be forwarded to U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's office, the congresswoman announced on Twitter.
