Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued For Long Island

See when the threat of severe storms will be the highest on Thursday.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Severe thunderstorms are possible Thursday on Long Island.

"The Storm Prediction Center has placed the area in a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms Thursday into Thursday evening," the National Weather Service said in a hazardous weather outlook issued for the region. "Strong to locally damaging winds will be the main threat. Brief heavy downpours are also possible."

The highest threat of severe storms will be from about 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., the weather service says.

"There will be sufficiently warm and humid air in place in the East and the timing for thunderstorms will coincide with the peak of daytime heating during the afternoon and early evening hours on Thursday," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek says.

Temperatures are expected to top 70 degrees on parts of the island Thursday.

The full forecast:

Wednesday Night- A 20 percent chance of showers after 9pm. Patchy fog after 2am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. Southwest wind around 6 mph.

Thursday- Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Southwest wind 7 to 15 mph.

Thursday Night- Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 10pm, then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Cloudy, with a low around 48. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday- Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 63. Northwest wind around 8 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.

Friday Night- Increasing clouds, with a low around 46. Southwest wind 11 to 14 mph.

Saturday- A 40 percent chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60.

Saturday Night- A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41.

Sunday- Sunny, with a high near 53.

Sunday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 39. Breezy.

Monday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 54.
