Kings Park Man Dies of Head Injury Weeks After Struggle With Cops

A Kings Park man who took a blow to the head during a police struggle nearly three weeks ago died Saturday as a result of that injury, according to police.

On Sept. 24, Suffolk County Police received a call that Lawrence Ports, 60, was acting irrationally at his 35 Hemlock Drive home in Kings Park, and after arriving police decided to call the county's Mental Health Mobile Crisis Team to take Ports to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Police Step Up Patrols Over Halloween to Stop Psych Center Trespassers

Trespassers hoping to get a cheap thrill sneaking into the former Kings Park Psych Center this Halloween are more likely to wind up in handcuffs. 

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced Thursday it will be stepping up patrols and restricting travel near the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center property - now the Nissequogue River State Park - during the Halloween weekend.

Fall's Colors Begin to Emerge in Kings Park

Bright yellow, oranges and red leave are starting to gradually appear across Kings Park just in time for Halloween.  

Sunny skies and mild temperatures have led to a gradual onset of fall, as patches of bright yellows and reds are starting to decorate the trees at Nissequogue River State Park in Kings Park. 

Voters Approve Smithtown Library's $13.8M 2014 Budget

Town of Smithtown residents approved a robust $13.8 million budget for the Smithtown Special Library District on Tuesday.

The Smithtown Special Library District's $13,841,683 budget  budget for the 2014 fiscal year was approved, 1,006 votes to 577 votes against. 

Three trustees were elected to Smithtown Library's Board: Joseph Vallone with 1,174 votes; Diana Schilling-Held with 1,165 votes; and Gerard Cairns with 1,076 votes. Library trustees will serve a three-year term from Jan. 1, 2014 to Dec. 31, 2016.
