Health Department Orders 9 LI Sound Beaches Temporarily Closed After Heavy Rainfall

The threat of bacterial contamination from road runoff into drainage outfalls near the beaches, prompted the move by health officials.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — Today won't be a good beach day at a few favorite Westchester swimming spots.

The Westchester County Health Department has closed a handful of Long Island Sound beaches for today due to 0.72 inches of rainfall over the last 24 hours:

In New Rochelle, Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Beach Club, Greentree Country Club and the Surf Club on the Sound are closed.

In Mamaroneck, Harbor Island Park, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club and the Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club have been closed to swimmers.

In Rye, the Coveleigh Club has been ordered to close.

The beaches can reopen tomorrow, according to Westchester County officials.
