'Highly Respected' Mamaroneck Deputy Village Manager Dies Suddenly
Flags have been flying at half-staff to honor the longtime public servant who is remembered for "devotion, professionalism and kindness."

MAMARONECK, NY — As the village mourns an indelible part of the community, officials are also scrambling to fill the shoes of a leader who has make a transition time for the municipal government as seamless as possible.
The village has announced the sudden passing on Thursday of Daniel J. Sarnoff, deputy village manager of the Village of Mamaroneck.
"Daniel was an honest, patient, witty, and extremely knowledgeable individual," Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Sharon Torres said in a statement. "He was highly respected by Mayors, Trustees, and colleagues as well as residents alike. He will be greatly missed."

Flags in the Village have been flying at half-staff in honor of Sarnoff.
Hired in January 2010 as the assistant village manager, Sarnoff was promoted to deputy village manager in December 2022. During times of transition in village government, he also served stints as interim village manager.

Public officials recalled Sarnoff's 14 years of leadership in the village as being marked with devotion, professionalism and kindness. Prior to joining the Village of Mamaroneck, he had nine years of experience in local municipal government working in the Village of Scarsdale. He was a resident of North Salem.
Sarnoff's death comes at a time when he was asked to take on an oversized role in keeping the day-to-day functions of village government running smoothly.
"We learned of his death late today just hours before our public affordable housing meeting at the Emelin," Deputy Mayor Lou Young wrote on social media. "The Mayor made a brief announcement at the beginning of the meeting but I wanted to express my profound shock at the loss of such a fine human being and dedicated public servant. Since the departure of [Village Manager] Jerry Barberio, Dan has run the village AND performed his previous duties."
Young said that Sarnoff leaves big shoes to fill.
"Even on his last days he continued to work from home although he was obviously in great distress," Young said. "We will be meeting with Interim Village Manager Charles Strome (who is with us in a part-time capacity) next week to determine how the village government will be reorganized while we search for permanent replacements for our two top administrators. We are all in mourning but the business of village government continues. I wish to offer a special thanks to Deputy Clerk Sally Roberts and Deputy Treasurer Laura Vasami who are essentially running the show while the Board of Trustees considers our next moves."
