MAMARONECK, NY — Walter's is celebrating a big birthday, and the hot dog stand with a place on the list of National Historic Landmarks is throwing a bash fitting of the occasion.

It didn't take a century for the business founded in 1919 to build its reputation, but Walter’s Hot Dogs has tapped four generations to keep the world-famous hot dogs a must-have for locals and visitors alike.

This year’s celebration is so big it will take place over the course of two days at the original location in Mamaroneck — on Sunday, August 25, and Monday, August 26.

Sunday will be "Family Fun Day."

While a weekend visit to Walter's on Palmer Avenue almost always has a festive feel, the birthday celebration will take it up a notch. Live music, face painting, a photo booth, yard games, a balloon artist, raffles and a kids' table will all be on tap. Of course, the hot dogs that have been keeping customers coming back for over century will be the stars of the day.

Interestingly, the celebration in the middle of August might be a great chance to get a start on that holiday shopping list. Walter's commemorative merchandise will also be on sale, including the limited edition Walter’s Hot Dog ornament and anniversary t-shirts.

Just because Walter's is 105, doesn't mean they aren't still innovating. In addition to selling hotdogs at the flagship store, the now famous Walter's food truck will be open on the property from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., serving up "Puffy Dogs," floats and Walter's brand new chili cheese dog.

The flagship store will be open until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, with the celebration starting at noon. At 3 p.m., a hot dog eating contest hosted by Bona Bona Ice Cream’s Dan Cherico will feature more than fifteen contestants from the tri-state area and a few previous contestants looking to redeem themselves and claim this year’s title.

Monday will be "Customer Appreciation Day" with $1.05 hot dogs all day.

From noon to 3 p.m., a printmaking workshop hosted by ArtsMobile, created by ArtsWestchester, and sponsored by White Plains Hospital and Westchester County, will give hot dog connoisseurs a chance to learn how to memorialize the occasion for posterity.
