Ida Flood-Ravaged Duck Donuts Location Will Finally Reopen

The long months the popular shop remained closed served as a daily reminder that the wounds inflicted by the storm will take time to heal.

MAMARONECK, NY — After months of rebuilding following flooding as a result of the remnants of hurricane Ida, a popular Mamaroneck donut shop will once again open its doors this weekend.

Duck Donuts announced that after four months of rebuilding the shop due to severe flood damage, its Mamaroneck Avenue location is set to reopen on Saturday, at 9 a.m.

The store, owned by husband and wife, Dave and Bonnie Foncello, is located in the Mamaroneck Centre.

“We are very excited to reopen and can't wait to see old friends and welcome new ones,” Bonnie Foncello said in a statement announcing the grand reopening plans. “We are very thankful to everyone for their patience and continued support throughout the rebuilding process and we are extremely proud to be a part of such a wonderful community.”

The shop suffered water damage when Tropical Storm Henri blew into town in August, but the Foncellos were able to reopen quickly. Just a few weeks later when Ida arrived, the business was not so lucky and extensive reconstruction was required.

Starting this weekend, we will once again be able to watch and take in the aroma as our warm donuts are being prepared. Equally important, the Duck Donuts' signature coffee blends will once again be brewing. Now that our very own Duck Donuts is back, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy the espresso drinks, donut breakfast sandwiches and milkshakes as well.

The Mamaroneck Duck Donuts got us addicted to warm made-to-order donuts before the store was forced into an unplanned hiatus by Mother Nature. It hasn't been easy to find a substitute for the unique experience of creating donut combinations by choosing from a variety of coatings, toppings and drizzles, including adventurous creations like maple icing with bacon.

The viewing area where children and adults alike can watch their donuts being made creates some of the most stirring and evocative performances outside of the Emelin Theatre.

And for those of you wondering what inspired the unlikely billing, "Duck Donuts" — Duck Donuts opened its first locations in 2007 in the beach resort towns of Duck and Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Donuts will once again be made fresh to order in Mamaroneck, Mon. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tues. to Wed. 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Abbreviated hours until Monday, Feb. 7 will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m).
