Proposed $156M Mamaroneck School Budget On The Ballot May 16

MAMARONECK, NY — The 2023 budget and school board vote is May 16, and two seats are up for election on the Mamaroneck Board of Education.

The proposed spending plan of $155,518,144 is 3.91 percent higher than the current budget.

The tax levy is expected to rise 2.6 percent.

District officials said most of the increase in budget would go towards increases in salaries, building security, higher costs for utilities, debt service and BOCES services.

"This budget is an articulation of our goals, values and mission as a school systems and serves to ensure a smooth leadership transition by strategically investing in human resources for continuity and stability in all curriculum areas at a significant moment of system change," Superintendent Shaps said about his final budget before retiring. "The budget includes funding to support salaries and employee benefits for anticipated new collective bargaining agreements for four of our five employee units."

Two board seats will be up for election. There are two candidates running: David Mendes Carlos and Michele Metsch.

Proposition Two will also be on the ballot, regarding the establishment of an artificial turf capital reserve for reconstruction/renovation/replacement of artificial turf field Mamaroneck HS.

Proposition Three will ask voters to decide on an energy savings capital project.

Voters may register online with the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, or by mail through the County Board of Elections or contact the Office of the School Clerk. More information about voting can be found here.
