Waverly Ave. Bridge Replacement To Get Underway After False Starts

The bridge will close on Friday for a 10-month-long project that is considered key to flood mitigation efforts along the Sheldrake River.

The 10-month-long project will address serious structural deficiencies of the existing crossing, but is also expected to improve roadway alignment and include new sidewalks on both sides of the bridge.

MAMARONECK, NY — The delayed Waverly Avenue Bridge project is back on after a sometimes bitter disagreement between municipalities over the costs associated with traffic control.

The bridge will be closed again beginning Friday. The bridge initially closed in October, but the project was abruptly halted over the dispute between the Village of Mamaroneck and Town of Mamaroneck.

Now that bridge replacement is set to start once again, drivers are being told to follow the posted detour using Hoyt Avenue. Access to local businesses near the bridge will be maintained at all times. The bridge closure is still expected to take 10 months.

Design of the new bridge incorporated recommendations from the 2017 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Risk Management Final Report. The report called for replacing the bridge with a longer span and deeper foundations, which will eventually allow the Army Corps of Engineers’ plans to widen the channel.

The 10-month-long project will address serious structural deficiencies of the existing crossing, but is also expected to improve roadway alignment and include new sidewalks on both sides of the bridge. Other work at the site will include relocation and replacement of underground and overhead utilities, including water, sewer, electric and gas lines.

The Town of Mamaroneck received grants for the project in the amounts of $1.75 million through the NYS Department of Transportation BridgeNY program and $2.084 million through Westchester County’s Flood Mitigation Grant program.

Bi-weekly construction meetings will be held during the length of the project with the project team (including representatives from both the Town of Mamaroneck and the Village of Mamaroneck).

The construction contract was awarded by the Town of Mamaroneck to ELQ Industries this summer.

"We realize this closure will be an inconvenience," The Village of Mamaroneck said in a statement announcing the restart of work. "We encourage motorists to plan ahead, seek alternate routes, and give yourselves plenty of extra time. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones."

The Town of Mamaroneck, which is solely responsible for the replacement of the bridge, has put together an informational webpage on their website about the Waverly Avenue Bridge Replacement Project. Updates on the project contact information can be found here.
