Waverly Avenue Bridge Will Close Friday As Crews Replace The Span

Design of the replacement bridge incorporated recommendations from the 2017 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Risk Management Final Report.

The 10-month-long project will address serious structural deficiencies of the existing crossing, but is also expected to improve roadway alignment and include new sidewalks on both sides of the bridge.

TOWN OF MAMARONECK, NY — A long-awaited bridge project over the Sheldrake River is underway and the new span is expected to help a notoriously floodprone area while also improving traffic flow.

The Waverly Avenue Bridge will be closed, beginning on Friday at 10 a.m. According to town offcials, this marks the start of a project to replace the bridge.

Design of the new bridge incorporated recommendations from the 2017 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Risk Management Final Report. The report called for replacing the bridge with a longer span and deeper foundations, which will eventually allow the Army Corps of Engineers’ plans to widen the channel.

The 10-month-long project will address serious structural deficiencies of the existing crossing, but is also expected to improve roadway alignment and include new sidewalks on both sides of the bridge. Other work at the site will include relocation and replacement of underground and overhead utilities, including water, sewer, electric and gas lines.

Drivers should follow the posted detour using Hoyt Avenue as an alternate route. Access to local businesses near the bridge are not expected to be disrupted. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones.

The Town of Mamaroneck received grants for the project in the amounts of $1.75 million through the NYS Department of Transportation BridgeNY program and $2.084 million through Westchester County’s Flood Mitigation Grant program.

Bi-weekly construction meetings will be held during the length of the project with the project team (including representatives from both the Town of Mamaroneck and the Village of Mamaroneck).

The construction contract was awarded by the Town of Mamaroneck to ELQ Industries this summer.

"The Project Team understands that impacts from Bridge Construction will cause short-term unavoidable inconvenience," town officials said in a statement released this week. "We urge the public to have patience as the long-term benefits from the Waverly Avenue Bridge Replacement will provide increased resiliency for the community during storm events and improved pedestrian and traffic safety along this corridor."

Drivers are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones.
