Crimes Nearby, Pt. II: Public Assistance Fraud, DWI Arrests

Recent criminal activity reported in southeast Nassau County communities.

The following information is taken directly from the Nassau County Police Department's incident reports. None of the defendants have been convicted of a crime.

Bellmore

  • A man reported on May 21 that the side passenger window of his vehicle parked on Corner Lane was shattered.
  • On May 26, Jean Berquin, 52, of Freeport was arrested on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore and charged with driving while intoxicated as well as one vehicle and traffic law violation.
  • On May 27, Anthony Scirica, 41, of Kernersville, N.C. was arrested near the corner of Merrick Road and Bedford Avenue and charged with driving while intoxicated.
Massapequa
  • On May 21, Donald Neale, 33, of New Cassel was arrested at Macy’s in the Sunrise Mall and charged with robbery.
  • A woman on Greatwater Avenue reported on May 21 that miscellaneous items were removed from her yard.
  • Thefts from vehicles were reported on May 21 on Oakdale Avenue, Francine Avenue and North Elm Street.
Merrick
  • On May 21, a vehicle parked on Wesley Avenue in North Merrick had its window broken.
  • On May 26, George Barrera, 37, of Bellmore was arrested near the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Merrick Avenue and charged with driving while intoxicated as well as three vehicle and traffic law violations.
  • A Merrick couple was charged on May 30 with public assistance fraud, according to the district attorney's office. For more information, click here.
