Hempstead Board Enacts Traffic Laws: See Blocks Affected

The laws will impact streets in Elmont, Levittown, Merrick, Roosevelt, Uniondale, Valley Stream, West Hempstead and Woodmere.

HEMPSTEAD, NY. — The Hempstead Town Board met Tuesday morning and unanimously approved resolutions to enact four parking-related laws across multiple municipalities. The resolutions will impose restrictions to parking, standing and stopping, as well as introduce handicapped parking spaces on a pair of streets.

A pair of “No Stopping Here To Corner” restrictions will take effect at the intersection of Meacham Avenue and D Street. The "No Stopping" zone on Meacham Avenue will be on the east side of the street, extending south from the intersection for 30 feet and north from the intersection for 47 feet.

As for D Street, the "No Stopping" zone will cover 35 feet east of the intersection with Meacham on the north side of the street, and 25 feet east of the intersection on the south side of the street. The section of D Street west of Meacham Avenue will not see any changes to its stopping laws.

A stop sign is also coming to Elmont after Tuesday’s meeting, on the westbound side of North Ascan Street at the intersection with Home Street.

Levittown

Under the new laws, “No Stopping Here To Corner” restrictions will be posted on the north side of Old Oak Lane, prohibiting stopping for 30 feet starting from both the east and west curblines of Acorn Lane. The "No Stopping" zone will extend east from the east side of Acorn Lane and west from the west side of Acorn Lane.

A similar pair of “No Stopping Here To Corner” signs will be placed on the east and west sides of Acorn Lane, prohibiting stopping in a 30-foot stretch north from the Old Oak Lane intersection.

Currently, there is a stop sign on Acorn Lane at the intersection with Old Oak Lane.

Levittown will also get a pair of new stop signs, one on the eastbound side of Morning Glory Road at the intersection with Myrtle lane, and another on the southbound side of Myrtle Lane at the intersection with Periwinkle Road.

Merrick

A handicapped parking spot will be added to the north side of Byron Road, starting 60-feet east of the intersection with Merrick Avenue, and will extend east for 20 feet.

Roosevelt

A “No Parking Anytime” restriction will be put in place, covering a 24-foot stretch on the south side of East Fulton Avenue that starts 403-feet east of the Stevens Street intersection.

Uniondale

A “Two Hour Parking” rule will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on all days except Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays on the east side of Nassau Road, starting 67-feet north of the intersection with Uniondale Avenue and extending north for 88 feet.

A “No Stopping Here To Corner” restriction will also take effect on the east side of Nassau Road, covering a 67-foot stretch of road north of the intersection with Uniondale Avenue.

Finally, a handicapped parking spot will be added to the east side of Coleridge Road, covering a 20-foot stretch of the road that starts 165-feet south of the intersection with Lee Road.

Valley Stream

A “No Stopping Here To Corner” restriction will take effect on the north side of Hungry Harbor Road, starting at the west side of the intersection with Glenridge Avenue and covering 55 feet of roadway west of the intersection.

A stop sign will be added on the eastbound side of Sherwood Street at the intersection with Plainfield Lane.

West Hempstead

A pair of “No Parking 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.” restrictions will be added on the north side of Fairlawn Avenue. One will start 39 feet east of the intersection with Maplewood Street and cover 84 feet east from that point, while the other will start 201 feet east of the intersection with Maplewood and cover 68 feet east of that point. Neither of those regulations will be in effect on Sundays.

Additionally, the board repealed a “No Parking 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.” restriction on the the north side of Fairlawn Avenue, starting 449 feet west of the Morton Avenue intersection and running for 230 feet. That restriction was initially imposed in 2008.

Four stop signs will also be placed at Westminster Road intersections. Eastbound traffic on Groton Place and westbound traffic on Trinity Place, St. Pauls Place and Avon Place will all have to come to a full stop when they reach the intersection with Westminster Road.

Woodmere

A pair of “No Stopping Here To Corner” restrictions will take effect on Clark Place, one on the east side and one on the west. Both “No Stopping” zones will cover the 40 feet north of the intersection with Ocean Avenue.
