Island Trees Student Named Finalist in 'There Ought To Be A Law' Contest

Cathryn Kramer, a sixth grader at Island Trees Memorial Middle School, has been named a finalist in the "There Ought to Be a Law" contest.
Each year students in the local area compete in the contest, sponsored by New York State Senator Kemp Hannon. Students in the sixth grade work with their social studies teachers to brainstorm issues that could be resolved by creating laws. The entries are submitted and winners of the contest are honored in the spring.
This year Kramer was named a finalist in the competition. Kramer brainstormed a law that protects children from wearing backpacks that weigh more than a certain percentage of their body weight.
Kramer was honored at Levittown Hall on Thursday, May 16, and was awarded a citation from to office of State Senator Kemp Hannon.
