Levittown Schools Respond To Coronavirus Outbreak

The superintendent reminded parents and guardians what how to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 infections.

LEVITTOWN, NY — The Levittown Superintendent is reminding parents of measures to take regarding COVID-19, known as the coronavirus, in a February letter to parents and guardians.

Superintendent Tonie McDonald said that area superintendents met with Nassau County's health administrator who advised them that prevention measures were akin to those of the flu or common cold, like regular hand washing, cleaning surfaces, using hand sanitizer and more.

Activities are not being canceled, the letter says, adding that officials will share any updates with parents and guardians.

Eleven cases of the new coronavirus were confirmed in New York as the total number of cases in the United States topped 100 and the nationwide death toll climbed to nine, officials announced Wednesday.

Tensions over how to contain the coronavirus escalated this week in the United States as the death toll climbed, The Associated Press reported. Lawmakers expressed doubts about whether the government can ramp up testing to effectively mitigate the spread.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said current symptoms reported for people with COVID-19 include mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough and difficulty breathing.

The virus is spreading from person to person, and someone who is sick with the virus can spread the illness to others, medical officials said. There is currently no vaccine to prevent the new coronavirus. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus.

The CDC recommends preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, such as:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Stay home if sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue away

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using regular household cleaning spray or wipes.
