Nassau County Infant Hospitalized After Drinking Recalled Formula Linked With Botulism: Report

The formula has already been recalled after being linked to an infant botulism outbreak, a report says.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY. — A Nassau County infant was hospitalized after ingesting baby formula that has been linked to an infant botulism outbreak and recalled nationwide, according to a Wednesday report from Newsday.

The report states that infant botulism usually impacts children younger than 1-year-old, as their stomachs can’t kill the bacteria that causes the disease yet. County officials did not release the child’s age or hometown, Newsday said, also declining to provide information about when the child fell ill or which hospital they’re in.

ByHeart, the company that makes the formula linked to botulism, issued a recall of the formula Tuesday. A couple in Kentucky filed suit against ByHeart Thursday after their child contracted infant botulism from ByHeart formula, according to WKYT.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, infant botulism can cause a slow paralysis in affected babies, who may exhibit symptoms including constipation, drooping eyelids, lack of facial expressions or weak feeding.

And, according to the CDC, botulism causes affected infants' large intestines to produce a neurotoxin that can cause asymmetrical paralysis and decreased muscle tone, also known as hypotonia.
