School Board Candidate Profile: Barbara Medellin

Medellin has served on the board since 2010, running unopposed with Kristen Daum for two open seats.

Running unopposed for re-election to the Island Trees Board of Education is Barbara Medellin, a 23-year resident of the district.

Medellin is a teacher assistant at Island Trees Scope Pre-school and has three daughters who are all graduates of Island Trees High School.  

Medellin has held numerous leadership positions in the community. She said she volunteered her time at the middle school during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, co-chaired three ITHS post-prom breakfast, did photography for Stokes Elementary school from 1999-2004, and has held numerous fundraisers in the schools, among other efforts.    

“As a Board member, I will continue to work to the best of my ability to always put education first while keeping the needs of the community a priority at all times,” Medellin said.

She is also current member of the IT PTSA and a past historian of the Stokes PTA, and helped Carol Siegel at the onset of the Island Treees School to Business Program Partnership.  

“Maintaining excellence in education has always been and will always be of the highest importance,” she said.    

Voting for the 2013-14 school budget vote and trustee election takes place 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.. at the Michael F. Stokes School on Tuesday, May 21.
