Town Of Hempstead Opens Cooling Centers; Beach, Pool Hours Extended

The town has set up eight cooling centers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — With the hot weather ushering in summer this week, the Town of Hempstead is opening cooling centers for residents.

The eight locations are:

  • Baldwin Senior Center: 1810 N. Grand Ave.
  • Bellmore Senior Center: 2000 Bellmore Ave.
  • Elmont Senior Center: 138 Elmont Rd.
  • Franklin Square Senior Center: 1182 Martha Pl.
  • Levittown Senior Center: 555 N. Newbridge Rd.
  • Oceanside Senior Center: 2900 Rockaway Ave.
  • Roosevelt Senior Center: 2 Babylon Tpke.
  • Salisbury Senior Center: 460 Salisbury Park Dr., Westbury

The cooling centers will be open Wednesday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Summer is just getting started here in Hempstead Town, and we’re greeted by a
forceful heatwave," Supervisor Don Clavin said. "We urge residents not to let their guards down when it comes to the extreme heat, which can be hazardous and even deadly."

Another way to keep cool is by swimming at a town beach or pool. Beach hours are extended to 7 p.m. this week, while pools remain open until 8 p.m.
