Union Protest to Be Held at Site of New Walmart Market

Protest will be held Friday, 12 p.m. at 3335 Hempstead Tpke.

Several unions are planning to protest outside the site of the new Walmart Market in Levittown this Friday at noon.

“Protestors will call for the creation of good union jobs, but are also standing in solidarity with Walmart associates all over the country who are working off their jobs this week in protest,” the group Long Island Jobs with Justice said in a release.

Other groups planning on protesting include: UFCW/RWDSU Local 338, a retail, wholesale and department store union, UFCW Local 1500, a grocery worker union, and the Long Island Federation of Labor, which represents union workers from a wide range of fields.

“The Walmart is opening on the same site that a unionized Waldbaums closed the year before,” the release said.

The first Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 250 Neighborhood Market stores nationwide. This will be the first one on Long Island.

Located at 3335 Hempstead Tpke. in the Levittown Mews Shopping Center, the store is nearing completion, with the grand opening expected in July.
