Alzheimer’s Support Center Opens On Long Island To Help Patients And Families

A center offering services for Long Islanders living with Alzheimer's, their families and caregivers celebrated its grand opening last week.

AMITYVILLE, NY — A facility providing services for Long Islanders living with Alzheimer's and their families celebrated its grand opening in Amityville on Thursday.

The AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education and Resource Center officially opened its doors in June, and is the first of its kind as a facility that aims to support family members of those suffering from various dementias.

The 11,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art center is located in the former convent of the Dominican Sisters on Schleigel Boulevard.

According to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, around 60,000 Long Islanders are living with Alzheimer’s or related dementias, and thousands of family and professional caregivers are in need.

The center offers a variety of free services, including caregiver support,t such as instructing them how to travel with loved ones suffering from dementia. Memory screenings and support are also offered with activities involving memory games, music, art and poetry. Guests will also find life skills activities and a comprehensive resource library, all available to support patients, caregivers and family members.

The center is centrally located in Amityville and is accessible to the nearly three million residents of Suffolk and Nassau Counties.
