Soldier Ride Supports Wounded Vets

More than 1,000 cyclists expected to participate in event that kicks off Friday morning at Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst.

The Wounded Warrior Project – a national initiative designed to encourage wounded veterans to use cycling as part of their rehabilitation – comes to Babylon Town , for the third year.

The Soldier Ride will start at with an opening ceremony scheduled for 9 a.m. Riders, both veterans and those supporting them, will then make their way across Robert Moses Causeway to end the 20-mile ride on Ocean Parkway.

Babylon Town spokesperson Tim Ruggeri said last year's event drew about 1,000 riders. This year the Town expects an even larger turnout, noting that, "The ride gets bigger every year."

In fact, riders can still register, though spots for wounded warriors have been taken. who do register as individuals or teams can fundraise via the group's website.

Many local police and fire departments are riding as teams, including the Ocean Beach Police Department, which to date has raised more than $9,000 for the charity, according to Town officials.

All donations to the Florida-based non-profit are used for programs supporting injured service personnel. They include advocacy, counseling and family support, all of which help to ease the sometimes difficult transition to civilian life for returning veterans, many of whom have experienced life-changing injuries.

The will culminate with a community barbecue celebration at that’s open to residents who want to come and show their support. Tickets for the barbecue are $10 and can be purchased on July 22, the day of the event.

Spectators can also come to along the route, which runs through downtown Lindenhurst and Amityville along West Hoffman Avenue before heading east along Montauk Highway toward Robert Moses Causeway and then Ocean Parkway.
