Lindenhurst Native & Longtime Wrestling Coach, Referee Honored

Harold Furrer, Lindenhurst native and SUNY Oswego alum, has been inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

A Lindenhurst native and a 1965 graduate of the State University of New York at Oswego was recently recognized by the college for his achievements in wrestling.

Harold Furrer of Lindenhurst was inducted to the Oswego Athletic Hall of Fame during a in the Hewitt Union ballroom on the SUNY Oswego campus.

Furrer wrestled from 1961 to 1965, serving as captain for two years. He was a SUNY Athletic Conference champion in the 130-pound weight class for three years, a Section Eight champion in 1961 and undefeated in 44 dual meets for SUNY Oswego.

Furrer also qualified for the NCAA tournament in 1964 and 1965.

"I'd like to thank Oswego and [long-time wrestling coach] Jim Howard," Furrer said, according to a recent press release about the ceremony posted by SUNY Oswego on ReadMedia. "The school has grown a lot bigger, but it's still a beautiful Oswego."

A science teacher for three decades, Furrer was a coach for more than 25 years, and served as a wrestling referee in Nassau and Suffolk counties for 15 years.
