Lindenhurst Schools Closed Tuesday Due to Sandy

Superintendent says the District will be closed, but the Lindenhurst High School remains open as a temporary evacuation center.

Lindenhurst Schools will be closed on Tuesday due to Hurricane Sandy - aka Frankenstorm.

Superintendent Richard Nathan told Lindenhurst Patch on Monday afternoon the schools will once again be closed due to the severity of the storm.

"We're closing the schools on Tuesday," Nathan said. "We've sent out a school messenger message to parents and its on our website, as well."

He also said a determination about whether or not the schools will be closed on Wednesday will be made on Tuesday.

"We'll keep parents in the loop about Wednesday and the rest of the week. We're taking this one day at a time," he said. "We're concerned especially for the safety of our families. There's alot of flooding South of Montauk Highway right now."

He also said the Lindenhurst High School will remain open as a temporary evacuation center.

The decision to open the school as such was made, the superintendent said, after speaking with Mayor Tom Brennan on Sunday morning, who told Lindenhurst Patch a mandatory evacuation for residents living south of Montauk Highway was put into place on Sunday effect from the Village and the Town of Babylon

"It's a temporary evacuation center, it's open for people seeking refuge on their way to more permanent shelters or other accommodations," Nathan said, who noted as of last night there were only three people who were there.

He also said any activities - the high school's annual Safe Halloween event on Wednesday afternoon - and the quarterly exams scheduled for this week would have to be rescheduled, but no decision as to how or when they might me has been made yet.

"The quarterlies would have to be rescheduled, and we'll have to figure that out," Nathan said.

As for the Halloween event, he said, students need a full day to prepare for the event so if, say, students do go back on Wednesday, the event might happen on Thursday.

But, again, for now, in the face of Sandy, the rescheduling of activities and tests is still fluid, and Nathan said the District will keep parents informed.

He also noted Western Suffolk BOCES is closed on Tuesday.
