Lindenhurst Schools Reopen on Wednesday

Superintendent says it'll be a regular school day, and plans are in place for Harding students who will return tomorrow, as well.

A little more than a week after Hurricane Sandy ravaged Lindenhurst, the Lindenhurst School District is reopening schools on Wednesday.

A message was posted on the District's website on Tuesday afternoon outlining what's happening:

"On Wednesday, November 7, the Lindenhurst School District will open its doors as a regular school day. All of the schools have power, with the exception of Harding Avenue Elementary School.

"Harding Avenue students in grades three, four and five will attend the Middle School, while kindergarten through second grade will attend William Rall Elementary School. Teachers, administrators and staff are working together to make a smooth transition.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those families who have been impacted by this catastrophe.

Superintendent Richard Nathan also told Lindenhurst Patch this afternoon the Harding students who will be attending either Rall or the LMS will be in individual classrooms with their own teachers in the classrooms.

"We're reopening tomorrow, and hope to have a successful day," Nathan said.

The superintendent also indicated teachers are instructed to give no exams until the end of next week, and the Frost Valley trip scheduled for next week, November 14 to 16, has been moved to December, but he didn't have the new dates available at presstime.

Additional information was posted on Tuesday afternoon on Facebook by Lindenhurst Board of Education Trustee Ed Langone, who's been posting there to help keep residents informed.

He wrote the following:

"Please note this is official. Lindenhurst Schools are open tomorrow.

"Harding Avenue students will either attend Rall (grades K-1-2) or Middle School (grades 3-4-5).

"Walkers should report to Harding Avenue, and will be bused to the right school. Bus riders for the most part will be at their regular stops, with some exceptions. [School Principal] Mr. Chamberlain will communicate.

"We have made every effort humanly possible to accommodate these students in one single location, but it is possible. Hopefully this is a short-term solution.

"Lunches will be free for all students for the remainder of the week.

"Homework: There will be no homework for the rest of the week, nor any tests.

"Thank you to all of the staff and administrators for their help in making this happen, and for the patience of our residents during this difficult time.

"If events change due to the impending Noreaster, then we will communicate that."
