LIPA: Lindehurst Substation Restored

Officials tell Village of Lindenhurst the substation on Cortland Street is one of three restored today.

LIPA officials told the Village of Lindenhurst late Tuesday afternoon the substation on Cortland Street has been restored - one of three on Long Island.

While that's a good step toward beginning to restore power in Lindenhurst, it's not enough according to Lindenhurst officials.

They told Lindenhurst Patch today LIPA crews have been all but absent in the Village, and they're sorely needed as much of the Village and North Lindenhurst is still without power as of Tuesday night.

LIPA came in today, according to officials, to denenergize South of Montuak Highway, and disconnect it from the North side, since the majority of residences South of Montauk Highway was still under water following Hurricane Sandy.

However, it seems, that's as far as LIPA got, frustrating Lindenhurst officials, who said Department of Works crews out clearing trees and other debris from streets across the Village have been hampered by downed wires caught up in downed trees, limbs and branches.

DPW crews can't go near those with wires until LIPA comes in to ensure they're deenergized and gives the DPW the all clear.

As a result DPW officials said today there are 17 blocked roads where trees are down, completely blocking the roadway, across the Village that involve wires, and that's not counting the streets halway blocked involving wires.

The DPW is doing the best it can to clear streets of trees and debris, but without LIPA the efforts are slowed.

Lindenhurst officials stressed to LIPA this afternoon the importance of getting crews down to the Village, and New York State Assemblyman Bob Sweeney also made a call on the Village's behalf.

However, the bottom line, as of Tuesday night, is much of Lindenhurst is still without power, and besides learning the substation has been restored, there's no timetable as to when power will be back for many residents.
