The Town of Babylon and officials from the New York City Police Department, Babylon School Board and Babylon Village government came out to honor fallen NYPD Detective Peter Figoski with a street renaming ceremony in West Babylon on Saturday morning.
“I’ll be proud to tell my kids that they live on a block named for a hero,” said Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Executive and a West Babylon resident, before a crowd of hundreds on the corner of Midwood Road and Norton Avenue. “We live among heroes, and we don’t even realize it.
“They’re just leading their normals lives, raising a family, contributing to our communities... but they’re what make our communities great.”
Rich Schaffer, Babylon Town Supervisor, and Figoski’s four daughters – Caitlyn, Christine, Caroline and Corinne – helped unveil the new street sign, honorarily renaming Midwood Road in the memory of the deceased detective.
The ceremony, interrupted for a short period by rain, also included speeches from Ray Kelly, NYPD Commissioner, and Ralph Scordino, Babylon Village mayor.
Figoski was gunned down in December 2011 by a fleeing robber while responding to a robbery call in East New York. His shooter, Lamont Pride, was found guilty and sentence to at least 45-years to life in prison for his murder.
